National Commission for Women rejects Thomas Reuters Foundation’s survey, shames it

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has come out strongly against the survey conducted by Thomas Reuters Foundation wherein it has ranked India has the most
dangerous country for women in the world.

National Commission for Women said that the Thomas Reuters Foundation poll claims that the organization surveyed nearly 550 experts – from Europe, Africa, the Americas, South East Asia, South Asia and the Pacific- focused on women’s issues, asking them to rank countries based on a number of key issues.

The Commission rejected the survey in question on the grounds that for a nation as big as India, with a population of approximately 1.3 billion, the sample size of the survey is not representative of the country as a whole.

Chairperson Rekha Sharma said, “Women in India are aware of their legal rights and the procedure and method of access to the legal system more than ever before. Some of the
countries that have been ranked after India have women who are not even allowed to speak in public.”

She added that agencies like the National Commission for Women, State Commissions for Women, various civil society organization and the media have been instrumental in building awareness among women and girls.
