Congress President Rahul Gandhi was in Guwahati yesterday where he openly trashed the Citizenship Amendment Bill initiated by the BJP.

He said that the main reason for the riots in the North-East is due to the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

Rahul Gandhi also called the Bill anti-North East.

The Citizenship Bill will help the persecuted Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists of Bangladesh and Pakistan to get Citizenship in India. Regional parties fearing dilution of the identity, culture, and language of the states of North East are opposing the Bill. BJP and the Bill supporters say that the persecuted Hindus and others who were Indians just a few decades back cannot be left out high and dry in the face of rampant religious persecution and discrimination.

There are also fears that the Hindu-majority demography of North-East is changing faster in the region due to infiltration. The Bill, BJP leaders say will keep another Pakistan at bay.

But Rahul Gandhi is clear; Congress is against the Bill. He even took the credit for stopping the bill in the lower house stating that it was the Congress party that stopped it in the Rajya Sabha.

Rahul Gandhi told the crowd that ‘we stood with you when you needed us.’ Whether this would translate in votes in the upcoming General elections is for us to see. Congress is looking for at least 20 seats from this region.
