BJP chief Amit Shah went to seek the blessings of Lingayat seer Dr. Sri Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru Swamiji on his visit to Sri Murugha Mutt in Chitradurga yesterday. He hailed the Swamiji and said:
The Swamiji’s contribution towards removal of inequality, poverty and helping the farmers & workers in implementing developmental projects is unparalleled.
He was accompanied by former Chief Minister of Karnataka, B.S. Yeddyurappa, who is considered a Lingayat strongman. Amit Shah had earlier said, that the move to accord separate status to Lingayat religion was aimed at stopping Yeddyurappa from again becoming a Chief Minister.
Shah had said:
“The Siddaramaiah government has proposed to accord religion and minority status to Lingayats, but why did it not do it earlier? Because that time, there was no need for gaining votes.”
But it seems that the meeting with the Lingayat seer had the opposite effect and today the Seer fired a letter to the BJP chief stating that the minority status to this (Lingayat) “religion will deliver some benefits to youth of community-individually and collectively. It is not a step to divide community but measure to unite divided sub-castes of Lingayats.”

Earlier, on Sunday, in a gigantic rally in Vijayapura, Lingayat Seer seer Dr Channasiddarama Panditaradya Swamiji, who is one of the Pancha Peetha seers, accused the Congress of working on an agenda to eliminate Hindus.
Not stopping at that, he called the leaders of Congress, ‘Pak agents.’ He had said that the government is working to divide Hindus as it understands that Hindus have become major support base of the Bhartiya Janata Party. Asking people to not vote for Congress at all, he said that the separate religion status is a ploy to stop Narendra Modi from retaining power in 2019.
