Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago celebrates Diwali with Hindus (Pics)

Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Keith Rowley and his wife Mrs. Sharon Rowley enjoyed Diwali celebrations at the Diplomatic Centre, St Anns yesterday (Sunday 04 November 2018).

Diwali is one of the major festivals of the Hindu community worldwide and Trinidad and Tobago are no different with the Prime Minister himself wearing a crisp kurta and his wife doing the honors in Indian wear.

Earlier, Rowley’s colleague and Culture Minister Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly was severely criticised by Pundit Satyanand Maharaj, who claimed she wore an African Muslim wear at the opening of the Divali Nagar on Sunday night. He insisted that on the festive occassion at least she could have dressed more to match the festival. However, by and large the Hindu community seemed satisfied with her. He also said that the Hindus were once around 50% of the total population of Trinidad and Tobago but were now just around 19%. He termed it as ‘state sponsored erosion’ of the Hindu population in one of his most boisterous comments.

Among those in attendance were more than fifty families who were affected by the recent floods.

Hindus are the second-largest religious group (24%) after Roman Catholics in the total population of 1.3 million people.

The Prime Minister was forced to tender an apology to the Hindus of his nation after a skit in which a woman was shown as being disrobed.
