Tripura: Tribal youths clash with Muslims after alleged molestation

A girl on her way to see Durga Puja in the West Tripura’s Ranirbazar area was allegedly molested by some youth from the minority community and her male companion was also allegedly assaulted by the perpetrators on Friday. The two had a harrowing experience and a bid was made to snatch the belongings of the girl including her mobile phone.

After they were able to escape from the clutches of the robbers, the two went back to their locality and returned with their community leaders. Following an altercation, at least 61 families have fled the place while the police have arrested the molesters.

There are several reports which suggest that the situation went out of hand and as a result, several Muslim families had to flee their homes.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 was promulgated in the area for 48 hours from 8 am on Saturday, while the families are still not willing to return to their houses. Police are still deployed in the area.

Meanwhile, seeing that Assam is benefiting from the NRC exercise, Pradyot Debbarman, son of the last king of Tripura Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya, will soon be moving a writ petition in the Supreme Court on Monday demanding NRC in Tripura.
