Bollywood celebrity and fashion icon Sonam Kapoor has made some shocking revelations in an interview with Femina. In a conversation with Tanya Chaitanya, the actress said that she was molested by a stranger when was just 13 years old.
Recalling her ordeal, Sonam said,
Before I became a celebrity, I was just a regular pretty girl in public. This happened when I was at a movie hall. I was groped by a guy who I couldn’t see in the dark. I was only 13 years old and deeply disturbed by the whole episode. I remember going to my teacher and school counselor, and telling them about it. They said that everybody is groped; that groping is not molestation. They thought rape was molestation. Even at 13 I knew what it was—that if somebody gropes you or squeezes your breasts, it is molestation. I spoke to my mum about it in order to deal with it.
Sonam Kapoor also raised the issue of inadequacy of the education system in India and the lack of awareness among women about the various forms of unwanted sexual advances that can come unexpectedly. She said there is no safe-haven for women anywhere in the world.
Sonam Kapoor is one of the most fashionable actresses of the modern era, and it is her valor and courage to speak about issues that most choose to ignore. Calling a spade a spade, she says that if somebody labels you a tart for what you’re wearing, it’s a reflection on them, not you. It’s your body, your right to dress the way you want, and your sexuality. Be who you want to be.
Sonam recently slammed the photographers who took intentionally took inappropriate pictures of her at a recent event and called it a wardrobe malfunction.
