A written reply by the Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Danve Raosaheb Dadarao in Rajya Sabha, stated that it has been decided that notification in respect of Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Artefacts would be issued on 15th January, 2020 and it would become mandatory in the country w.e.f. 15th January 2021.

As on 31 Oct 2019, 877 Assaying and Hallmarking centres have been recognized by BIS which are equipped to hallmark jewellery in three categories 14, 18 and 22 carats as per IS 1417:2016. The State wise list of Assaying and Hallmarking Centre is enclosed at Annexure. The Assaying and Hallmarking centres are setup by private entrepreneurs and is a market driven activity where the decision to open a Centre is taken by the entrepreneur based on commercial viability as assessed by the entrepreneur at that location.
