New York, May 13, 2016: Mark Zuckerberg has shared views on the controversy surrounding Trending Topics.

In a statement on his Facebook page Zuckerberg spoke at length on Trending Topics and said that Facebook stands for giving everyone a voice. He further highlighted that he believed that diverse backgrounds and different ideas is what makes the social media unique.

Zuckerberg wrote: “We are one global community where anyone can share anything — from a loving photo of a mother and her baby to intellectual analysis of political events.”

On Trending Topics Zuckerberg said that it is designed to surface the most newsworthy and popular conversations on Facebook and said that it has rigorous guidelines that do not permit the prioritization of one viewpoint over another or the suppression of political perspectives.

He specifically pointed out a report that suggested that the Facebook contractors working on the Trending Topics suppressed stories with conservative viewpoints.

On this Zuckerberg said that the report would be taken  very seriously and a full investigation is also on it. However, he also said that so far no evidence has been found which suggests that the controversy around the Trending Topics is correct and he also added that if anything is found in the inquiry then that would be taken care of.

What is really interesting is what he wrote after this, Mark Zuckerberg said that he would be: “inviting leading conservatives and people from across the political spectrum to talk with me about this and share their points of view. I want to have a direct conversation about what Facebook stands for and how we can be sure our platform stays as open as possible.”

In short, Zuckerberg is open to hearing different thoughts and has no issues with the conservative point of view. It would be interesting to see which ‘conservatives’ he meets now!
