When Guru came out in 2007, there were little doubts on whose life the film was based on. Everyone knew that the inspiration behind Guru was none other than the iconic businessman Late Dhirubhai Ambani.
Guru’s problem with a prominent media personality played by Mithun Chakraborty aka Manikdas Gupta became the talk of the town with many coming up with new names and many pointing to the editor of an iconic newspaper of the time the Indian Express and its editor Ramnath Goenka.
Well! We surely now know the reporter who was the inspiration for Madhavan’s character in the movie.
Shyam Saxena, played by the Indian star R. Madhavan, is based on the life of Swaminathan Gurumurthy (S. Gurumurthy) whose reports each and everyone one of us must have read at some point or the other in an era when there were no social media!
What is great is that it was none other that S. Gurumurthy who confirmed that Guru was largely a true story and that the daredevil journalist who R. Madhavan played in Guru was none other than he, himself.
Yes .. it was largely a true story https://t.co/pW24X7Odm7

Yes the film Guru bearing my name was really on Ambani & Madhavan portrayed the journalist whose role resembled mine https://t.co/c3ScJb6H54

When a person asked if Mani Ratnam, the director of the movie, ever consulted the journalist he denied which certainly is a big loss to the viewers as personal inputs would have given even more strength to the character played by Madhavan.
