11.49 Crore Rural Households Provided Tap Water Connections

New Delhi, April 03, 2023: Since August 2019, Government of India, in partnership with State Governments, is implementing Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)-Har Ghar Jal to enable every rural household in the country to have assured potable water through tap water connection. At the time of announcement of Jal Jeevan Mission in August 2019, 3.23 Crore (17%) rural households were reported to have tap water connections. So far, as reported by States/ UTs as on 20.03.2023, additional 8.26 Crore rural households have been provided with tap water connections in last three and half years under JJM. Thus, as on 20.03.2023, out of 19.43 Crore rural households in the country, around 11.49 Crore (59%) households are reported to have tap water supply in their homes. State/ UT-wise and year-wise details are annexed. So far, as reported, 5 States viz. Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab & Telangana and 3 UTs viz. A&N Islands, Puducherry and Dadra Nagar Haveli & Daman Diu have become ‘Har Ghar Jal’ States and UTs respectively. The remaining States/ UTs have been advised to provide tap water connection by 2024.

Water being a State subject, it is the States who plan, design, implement and approve the water supply projects. Government of India supplements the efforts of State Government by providing financial and technical assistance. As such, operation and maintenance of water supply infrastructure created under the Mission falls under the ambit of respective State Governments. Accordingly, grievances/ complaints etc. inter alia including issues of disruptions in water supply and poor water quality are handled and disposed at State/ UT level. Such matters/ representations thus received in this Department so far have been forwarded to the respective State Government for taking necessary action.

Further, to assess the functionality of tap water connection provided under the mission, Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation, undertakes annual assessment through an independent third-party agency, based on standard statistical sampling. During the functionality assessment conducted from February, 2022 to April, 2022, it was found that 86% of households had working tap connections. Out of these, 85% were getting water in adequate quantity, 80% were getting water regularly as per the schedule of water supply for their piped water supply scheme, and 87% of households were receiving water as per the prescribed water quality standards.
